Contruction notice - offices moving to the library

Due to the need to install central air-conditioning in Rakov, several of the offices there are going to move to the library this summer, and will be here for the coming academic year. They will be on the ground floor in offices that are currently being built for them. This will mean much construction on the ground floor, and moving of some library materials. Please watch your step if you are down there, and ask us if you can't find anything. (Our downstairs information desk will be staffed some hours this summer, and you can generally find someone at the main floor information desk.)

New PCs!

Our IT colleagues are currently replacing a number of our PCs with brand new machines. Dell Optiplex GX620s, they have a Pentium 3.2 GHz processor, 1 GB/RAM, DVD & CD RW and floppy drives, 19" monitors plus the USB ports for your jump/thumb drives and headphone jacks are much more conveniently located - no more getting down on the floor!

Traveling this summer?

The U.S. State Department site has information on passports, travel advisories etc. Lonely Planet (a publisher of travel guides and books) has a very informative site where you can find out good basic information about a country; money, travel there, hotels... Look at our catalog to look for histories and travel accounts of a region or country. There's lots more of course, feel free to ask us - at the reference desk on the main floor, or IM us at drakeref.

We are now on summer hours, which while less extensive than those in the main semesters, are still quite substantial. You can check our hours online.

Amazing new reference set!

Just in: the new 2006 edition of the "Historical Statistics of the United States." This updates the previous edition of 1975, which was done by the U.S. government. This set is from Cambridge Press and beautifully done. It is a five volume set of historical statistics on a very wide range of topics, ranging from population to economics to government and much more. Many of the statistics given would not be readily available elsewhere, either in print or online. One can find in volume one for example in the immigration section a several page table, "Immigrants, by country of last residence, 1820-1997," or in volume three there is a table of "Disposition of municipal solid waste, 1960-2000," and volume five has a table on "Imports of selected commodities, 1790-1989." It's in the reference collection on the main floor, REF HA202 .H57.

Other SUNY library blogs

Some other SUNY libraries are trying their hand at blogs too, like SUNY Stony Brook's Melville Library blog. The folks up north at Potsdam's library have a blog too, as does Morrisville's library. It's all part of libraries trying to connect with you, our students and faculty!

What do YOU think about the library?

We think about the library all the time, it's our job, but, please, tell us, what do you think about it? Services, the PCs on the main floor, the books, movies, help at the different desks, noise...? We do the best we can to support your success as students but we can only see it from our perspective, and we would appreciate hearing about things from your perspective as a student - or faculty - user of the library!

Comment here, use our suggestion form, email us at adrake@brockport.edu, or email staff people directly - there's a staff directory online. Thanks, we value your input.
