You study here, why not work here?
We have a number of part time jobs here in the library for students. There will be some openings for this coming fall 2007. We have students working at service desks like the reference desk on the main floor, assisting people in our cataloging area, all sorts of things.
Interested? See Robin Glazier, the library secretary. (rglazier@brockport.edu.) You will need to come in to the library to fill out an application. You can find Robin in the director's office at the far end of the main floor from where you come in the library.

APA, MLA, University of Chicago?!
It's paper writing time again, and that often means using a particular style, like APA or MLA. There is help for citation styles online through our web page. We can help a little at the library reference desk too.
The professor however is in the end the authority on whether or not the paper meets the style standard, and when in doubt you should always check with them. After all, they give the grades, not us!

Who orders all the books?
We get asked that occasionally, who orders the books, and it's a good question. The books are largely ordered by the faculty in the different departments, in coordination with the librarians, each of whom works with several departments as their "liasion."
Each department gets a slice of the budget that is based on how many majors they have and similar factors.
A major challenge has been that for a number of years our book budget has not increased with inflation, thus reducing the number of books we can buy.
Here's the main acquisitions page, with links to lots of information about our book ordering.
Have suggestions about books to order? Great! And yes, student suggestions are very welcome! Email the librarian who covers that area - their emails and departments are in the list of library liasions. Not sure who on the list to contact? Email Debra Ames at dames@brockport.edu.

Scholars Day 2007
Tomorrow is Scholars Day 2007, and while we always enjoy your company here in the library, we hope you will make time to attend some of the interesting sessions scheduled.
There is a library session scheduled by the way, "Where's the articles and books I want?!"
The session is in 33 Hartwell Hall @2:30, presented by librarian Charlie Cowling (ccowling@brockport.edu).

Whole lotta printing goin' on...

Yes, there's a lot of printing in here this time of year. Luckily, we have a number of high speed printers. A tip: people tend to use that first set of PCs as you come in the building, try going towards the back of the floor, avoid long print waits. There is also a high speed printer downstairs in the Kiefer Room you're welcome to use if we aren't using the room for instruction.
Oh, the title line? It's a play on an old rock 'n roll song - have a look at our new Greenwood Encyclopedia of Rock History, REF ML3534 .G754!
