We don't have that article or book? We're glad to get it for you from some other library, but please, do check to make sure that we really don't have it!
You can check here to see if we have a journal online, and use our catalog to see if we have a certain book, journal, movie... (Hint: in the catalog use that bottom search box to type in your exact journal or book title, brings you right to where it should be if we have it...)
Not sure? Ask us for help!

Finding old ads...
Looking for old advertisements? One great place is in the NY Times Historical. It's the NY Times, including display ads as well as articles, 1851-2004!Click on Articles/Databases, then "N" in the a-z list, then click on NY Times Historical. Change the "document type" drop down to "display ads," put in the date range you want, and search for ads. Displayed here is an ad from 1950 using the word "diaper" for a search.

SAVE YOUR FILES!!!
For your own sake, as soon as you start that Word document, PowerPoint or spreadsheet, save it, save it, save it! Did I say save it? ;-)
Seriously, as soon as you start it, do file, save as... As someone who is regularly on the reference desk I frequently encounter people who have been working an hour or more, never saved the file, and then they accidently closed it, lost it...
Save it to your jump drive, or to your filecity folder!!!

Statistics!
Lot's of questions here lately about statistics - where can I get stats on STDs, all sorts of things. The government has lots of great stat sites - some are below. CQ Researcher and Opposing Viewpoints in our E-Reference site have stats too, and sometimes articles can help with stats.
- National Center for Health Statistics (health etc.)
- U.S. Census Bureau (population numbers...)
- Bureau of Labor Statistics (all sorts of economic and related stats...)
- Bureau of Justice (crime stats...)

Where we get all our books from...
Sometimes people will ask who orders our books, and the answer is a diverse mix of people. Each department is allocated money to buy books (and media etc.) with. Each department has a library coordinator who is one half of the link between the department and the library; the other half is the librarian who is the liaison to that department.
So, the various faculty order materials, the librarian liaisons order some titles, other people in the library process and catalog the materials, and then they appear on the shelves for you to use.
You may be interested to know that we have the largest book collection of all the SUNY four year schools!
