Finding images

Need images to use in a report? One place to look is in Academic Search Premier. Scroll down, and on the lower right check the boxes that apply for its Image Quick View search. The database pulls photographs, charts, illustrations etc. from its article collection and allows you to view, print or download them, so you can insert them into your Word document, or PowerPoint. presentation.

This image is from a recent article in World Policy Journal about the current economic crisis.

Welcome back!

Welcome back for Spring Semester 2009! The library is now open its usual extensive hours. We are looking forward to working with you, and will be glad to answer questions and help in any way we can. Please feel free to not only ask questions in person, but if it is more convenient, to phone, IM, or email us.

You might like to take advantage this semester, if you haven't already, of our growing collection of research guides online. (There is a link to them right on our main page too, under "Research Guides.") These guides describe the key resources available to you on a wide range of research needs.

Last but not least, consider taking the new virtual tour of the library!

RSS Feeds

One of our librarians, Charlie Bush, gave an interesting presentation yesterday about RSS feeds - those internet gadgets that feed information from a given site to you. In addition to the many news, special interest and other feeds available, the article databases we subscribe to also feature RSS feeds. For example, you can run a feed on a search in Academic Search Premier.

To learn more, see Charlie's research guide on RSS Feeds.

Obama inauguration

Today is a historic day, with the inauguration of Barack Obama taking place. There are many ways to view it, the television networks of course, and news sites online, like cnn.com. Another option is to go to the site of the Joint Congressional Committee on the Presidential Inauguration. They have video and audio, as well as much other information.

Copyright

Copyright has always been a tricky issue at times, but with the advent of new technologies and new rules in recent years it can be trickier than ever. So, what to do? One helpful resource is in our library research guide section (there's a link to them on our main page.) Take a look sometime at the copyright guide Pam O'Sullivan, librarian and college copyright officer, has created.

Brockport past

Next time you are in the library stop downstairs and have a look at the Special Collections display (pictured here.) Among other items, there is a model temple on the lower left that was given to the college many years ago by a former student who was a missionary in India. You can learn more about the college's past at the archive's web pages.

Early American Literature site

Something for those of you interested in Early American Literature: there is a wonderful online resource maintained by the University of Maryland that offers a number of such texts online, free to the general public. Try it sometime, the Early Americas Digital Archive!
