If you need to scan pages from documents, photos etc., there are four scanners in the library; two on the main floor and two newer ones in the ETC on the ground floor. Help is available with using them.

Swine flu

Looking for information on swine flu? Our article databases, like Academic Search Premier, would be useful sources. The U.S. CDC (Centers for Disease Control) is a good government site, as is the UN WHO (World Health Organization) site, and the NYS Department of Health.

Something new!

We're trying out a new way to get videos for people through inter-library loan when we don't own them ourselves. Sometimes videos can be hard to get from other libraries, so we are trying out a trial subscription with Netflix, the big online site for getting videos. We're always looking for new ways to provide you with what you need!

JSTOR & pop-up blockers

JSTOR & pop-up blockers are not good friends - to bring up the whole article in JSTOR, you click on the "pdf" link to the right, which launches the article as a pop-up... If you have a pop-up blocker running on your browser, it will block you from getting the article. The answer? Turn it off! Look in the tool bars at the top of your browser, right click on the pop-up blocker to disable it, or tell it to allow pop ups from JSTOR.

History of the college...?

Whether you're interested to know if your gr-gr-gr-grandfather graduated from here in the 1850s, as a recent caller wanted to know, or if you're curious about "campus" or "training" schools like we used to have, or have other questions about the college's 150 years of history, we may well have answers for you! The best place to start is at the college archives web page.

Campus or training schools? In the old days, from the 1870s thru the 1970s, Brockport, like many other colleges with a teacher training focus, maintained their own elementary schools on campus. Student teachers did their classroom experience right here, under the eye of professional "teacher-critics." Pictured are children and a teacher from the campus school on a field trip to the local firehouse ca1940.

As easy as 1,2,3, 4...

Yes, it's that easy to print while on the library main floor - if the printer near you is busy, or down (we try hard to maintain them, but it happens...,) you can always print to another printer. When you click on Print, at the top of the box that pops up you'll see a list of printers, DrakeLab #1, 2, 3 and 4. #1 is nearest the cafe and main door, the others run in order to the back of the floor.

"Just the facts M'am"

This fanous line from the classic TV show Dragnet could serve as an introduction to a news database we have, Facts on File. This is a classic of its own sort, a classic reference service that has coverage back to 1940. It is objective news reporting focusing on facts, statistics, dates, names... It also has special reports, for example there is one on the current economic crisis. A very interactive and informative site, it is well worth a visit!

What to call it...

What to call our new search engine that is - it's a clever site, if we say so ourselves, it lets you search ALL our databases at once if you want, or just certain ones. The name right now though is "360 Search," and we would like a better name. So please, help us out, do the quick and easy poll on the library web page!

Wikipedia vs Britannica

Interesting column in the Observer re Wikipedia recently. However one may feel about the merits of Wikipedia, students should bear in mind that professors generally do not favor its use. The library does provide access however to a wide range of academically acceptable reference materials, (dictionaries, encyclopedias etc.,) both online and in print, including to Wikipedia's competitor, Britannica.

In case you hadn't noticed, there's a link on the library web page, on the bottom, for New Titles Listing. Click on it to see the new books we've recently gotten. If you're in the mood for philosophy, we recently acquired The Inner Citadel: the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius.

Abe Lincoln

We have posted here before about the amazing resources in the American Memory site. hosted by the Library of Congress. Now here's another treasure from the site, the Lincoln collection of Alfred Stern, a major collector of Lincolniana. Pictured from the collection is an image of a life mask of Lincoln from 1865, which at the site you can click on and rotate. There are many more photographs, documents, letters etc. to view there.
