Memorial Day
The library is open on Saturday of this Memorial Day weekend, but closed on Sunday and Monday (you can see our hours here.) The picture here is a WPA poster from the 1930s. Note the elderly Union veteran; while the observance of Memorial Day seems to have arisen independently in many locations, the first organization officially recognizing and promoting it was the Union veteran's organization, the Grand Army of the Republic, in 1868.If you're curious about the GAR, try McConnell's Glorious Contentment: the Grand Army of the Republic, 1865-1900. (E462.1 .A7 M34) As an aside, although their heyday as a social and political force was in the late 1800s, the last GAR encampment was in 1949, with six members attending!

Summer Hours
Our hours are somewhat different in the summer, and change due to the rotation of the summer school sessions and also the holidays, like Memorial Day. The hours for that day always display to the left on the library web page, and this link takes you to the full schedule of hours.

What librarians do in the summer...
SUNY librarians typically work the calendar year, and use summer as a time to carry out projects, catch up on things etc., plus of course provide services to summer school students and faculty. One SUNY librarian has a somewhat different agenda for this summer however; Richard Delbango, a librarian at Nassau Community College, will be the ship's librarian for the summer cruise of SUNY Maritime's training ship (pictured here.) Richard is sharing his experiences through a blog which you can visit here.In case you weren't aware of it, one of the many unique centers in SUNY is our Maritime Academy, a training school for the Merchant Marine.

Looking for a PC?
This time of year the demand for PCs to use is high. Luckily we do have many PCs here in the library for you to use. If the PCs on the main floor are all in use, don't walk away - there are many more downstairs! If those classrooms down there are not in use, you are welcome to use the PCs in them. There are also some PCs available on the top floor.

Myalgia?
In an email from the student health service to the campus about swine flu there was a mention of symptoms, including that of "myalgia." If, like this blogger, you aren't sure what myalgia is, it simply means muscle pain. This information came from the Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary, one of the many reference titles we have available online!
