"Coming along slow but sure"

This line from Twain's Huckleberry Finn, as found in the MacMillan Book of Proverbs, captures the progress of the Dictionary of American English. Volume one came out in 1985, and the most recent is volume four, covering "P - Sk." If you are at all interested in English, as spoken in this country, take a moment sometime to look this set up in our reference collection on the main floor. It is interesting in this era of globalization to see how much regional difference still survives!
