The College & the Civil War

For Veterans Day it seems appropriate to post about one of the more storied infantry regiments in the Civil War, the 140th NY Volunteers. Company A of this regiment was drawn from the Brockport area, and a number of the men were graduates of our predecessor, the Brockport Collegiate Institute. Among other engagements, the regiment served at Gettysburg, playing a key role in the battle. Theodore Whipple, Class of 1859, of Company A, was one of the men to fall there. Pictured here is the memorial stone to the regiment at the Gettysburg battlefield park.

A modern day reenactment group portrays the 140th, and the library has a book about the regiment, The 140th New York Infantry by Bennett.
