Newbery and Caldecott Awards

Literature for children and young adults is a wonderful area not only for the intended readers, but for parents, teachers, and anyone who has fond recollections of a favorite book as a child. Two of the top annual awards in this area are the Newbery Award, given for the best childrens book, and the Caldecott, given for the best illustrations. This years titles were just announced, and you can read a news piece on it here. The American Library Association, which gives the awards, will have more on them soon, including a live webcast of the award presentations. Pictured here is the cover of this year's Newbery winner.

We have many of these award winning titles in our collection. They're in our catalog by title and author of course, and the award itself. They are marked on the shelves by special labels as well. Here is a list of Newbery winners since the award was first given in 1922, and a list of the Caldecott winners since it started in 1938. Take a break sometime from other things and look for some of these in our catalog!
