The NY State Archives has a nice display online now of photos and images of portraits of the governors of the state. Pictured here is Governor Thomas Dewey breaking ground for the Thruway. The Thruway is named after him, as anyone who has traveled it may recall from the signs along the way. His leadership in seeing the Thruway established was a major development in NY transportation. Before the Thruway, the main cross state route was Route 20, which at the time was crowded with traffic and had a number of slow points as one drove through the various villages along the way.
If you are interested in NY history, the library has many books and other resources. We have two copies for example of the standard contemporary history, The Empire State: A History of New York (F119 .E56 2001,) and for articles America: History & Life would be a great resource, as it includes indexing to New York History, the journal of NY history.
